October 23, 2006
On October 23rd, at 0046 hours The Apple Creek Volunteer Fire Department was alerted to a possible structure fire at PJ’s Restaurant, 80 E. Main Street, reporting heavy smoke coming from the roof of the building. Units arrived on scene to heavy smoke showing from the roof, and extending across 250 blanketing the buildings on the north side of the road. E101 arrived on scene staging in front of Pam and Bill’s Market. A first off crew of three firefighters proceeded with an aggressive interior attack. Meanwhile 2nd and 3rd alarms were called. Crews also set up to protect the residence on the left of the structure. The crew inside was soon evacuated due to heavy fire and collapse of the ceiling and roof. Minor injuries resulted from the interior attack. 2nd alarm tankers arrived and started shuttling water from a nearby dry hydrant, 3rd alarm units arrived soon after, including Orrville’s T66 and Dalton’s E38, which was set up to pump the aerial. Orrville’s E69 was standing by. Mutual Aid was provided by Wooster Township, Fredricksburg, Central, Kidron, Orrville, Dalton and Mt. Eaton.

One firefighter and one civilian were transported from the scene to an area hospital and treated for minor injuries. A second firefighter sought treatment on his own after all units returned to quarters.

Units operated on the scene for approximately five hours.

Vital statistics: 8 Fire Departments responded with approximately 80 fire personnel, 25 trucks and over 135,000 gallons were used to extinguish the fire.

Two vehicle MVC with entrapment. One patient flown by Metro Life Flight from the scene after extrication. Four other patients transported to area hospitals. Mutual Aid provided by Wooster Township FD, Central FD, Orrville FD, and North End Garage.

Mutual aid with Wooster City on a two car Mass Casualty MVC. There were 11 patients transported to the hospital. Six squads were utilized. Mutual aid was provided by Smithville, Wooster Township and Apple Creek Fire Departments.
